The Nightmare

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."

-- Albert Einstein

Well, starting from this quote, that encourages imagination, I am asking everyone to imagine this situation; “How are students educated in schools?”

I’ll start by myself and imagine this situation.

Once I went to a school to know more details about how to apply and the curriculum and other stuff,..etc. I made a tour over the school with the School’s director who was so talkative, and of course praising the school, teachers and the curriculum, and expressing how nice and interesting experience for the children to come to school daily.

I was just nagging my head, cuz I was extremely bored from him, and I took a glance on a class which was close to us and I looked at the students at the class, and really saw how they extremely enjoyed the school that much..!!!!!!

Well, first I saw those who were sleeping in class, those who were whispering with each other, those who were laughing so loud to the extent that the School’s director was embarrassed when he saw me taking a deep look on them, and frankly not only the students who were screaming but also the teacher’s voice was so loud, it was a real mess.

I smiled to the director and said “they seem to be enjoying so much the school to the extent that they are all happy and laughing all the time”

School’s Director: “ahhh, you know Maame, there are always that naughty students in class that are interrupting classes and making teachers losing their temper..”

Actually, I wasn’t surprised from this situation at all, because the school I went was a national school and not international ones. When I was going I hoped that this national school would be up to my expectations but unfortunately it wasn’t…

And that was a real great frustration for me, the fact was not from those naughty or sleepy students, or because it was national, I was frustrated from the whole educational system of “National schools” which I really hoped to be the best one ever, I have a real great envy when I worked in an international school and saw how children learn, how curriculums are designed accurately to suit every year age, how students really enjoy school. And also there are always those silly and naughty students, but actually those also have strong self-esteem, they are intelligent and very creative.

I envy them, not because they are better than Egyptians, but because they were brought up on the right track, they had strong basics that helped them in their characters, they were given good chances to think, to be creative. Which was totally different with Egyptian children, which unfortunately the education system limited their thoughts, ideas, ways of thinking by just making them study the book by heart without even understanding it, the criteria is by results at the end…..!!!

So what if I got excellent, but wasn’t creative person, doesn’t have good communication skills, can’t be independent, have no physical fitness, didn’t see the real monuments of my country, didn’t feel strong loyalty to my country,…????????

At this moment I stopped imagination and returned back to reality and then said; I don’t even blame those kids, I blame this education system that needs to be totally crashed and replaced by a new beneficial one.

For how long were we criticizing this system?

Since when there were lots of promises to develop this system?

Is it that hard to at least present the curriculum in an interesting way that suits every year age?

Is it that hard to think of the child’s own mental, physical, psychological development to be able to count on him as a beneficial citizen in his country after this?

Is it possible to have a strong interesting Egyptian Education Curriculum?

Why we always look to the short run, and ignore totally the long-run situation?

Can the day come, when the national schools become a role model for every international school?

Maybe I am expecting a lot, but why not? I really hope that the Egyptian Education could really develop and build self-esteemed, creative people that can result in the whole development of our country.

Really Development, Democracy won’t ever come without a good education background.

Unfortunately, if we remained like this, we won’t have to expect a lot. I think everyone of us has to save lots lots of money for his kid to go to international school, and forget totally our national schools till it changes totally, and who knows if it will change or not?!!

Finally, I closed my eyes and made a wish….of course you all can guess what this wish was…..?!!!!
